The Nobu restaurant in San Diego impressed us with its exquisite menu and beautiful atmosphere – the food was absolutely amazing, and the setting created the perfect vibe for a great dinner. However, unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. We were celebrating my friend’s birthday and ordered a dessert for her, but it was never brought to the table. When I ordered a dessert for myself, it arrived with a candle and a birthday greeting, which felt odd since it was my friend’s birthday. When we spoke to the waiter, we were told that they only offer ice cream, but even that was never brought for my friend.

During dinner, another incident occurred: after we had finished our appetizers and went to the restroom, the staff asked us to leave our credit cards at the table, as if they suspected we might “skip out.” We had left all our belongings, including expensive bags, at the table, which felt very disrespectful. The manager not only didn’t try to smooth things over but sided with the waiter, which left a bad impression.

While the food and atmosphere were definitely praiseworthy, the service was disappointing, and these moments really tarnished the overall experience.

Favorite dishes – San Diego sea urchin, Bluefin Tuna Tacos, House special roll.
Wouldn’t recommend- yellowtail jalapeño, spicy crispy rice & shishito peppers.
Premium Nobu sake we order two bottles because we love sake but it’s overpriced.
Staff was amazing, friendly hostess and efficient server. We had a good time but just not a place I would recommend it, there’s better sushi places in SD.

I’m honestly unsure why the San Diego Nobu gets a bad rep- our experience was fantastic, just like other locations we’ve visited.
Our server Jimmy was amazing! The service here is better than other locations I’ve visited. The quality of food is exactly the same. We stuck to the classics – black cod miso, crispy rice, jalapeño yellowtail and of course the lychee martinis!
    We’ll be back, Jimmy! 🙂

The ambiance is a dim sexy vibe, quiet busy itamaes and the hustle of waiters. The hosts were kind and the host manager was more business than friendly. We sat in the bar lounge where the seating is comfy and the tables are quaint. We meant to order just two items to share (which they state their menu is meant to be shareable. Don’t expect ample portions) however after having the first two items we ended up ordering more. Each item was delectable, decadent and a beautiful corresponding mouthful of flavor. I have NEVER had such amazing spicy tuna.
    What we had:
    Brussel sprouts
    Crispy Rice with spicy tuna
    Vegetable tempura
    Spicy tuna roll
Drinks: Mia margarita and purple cloud (virgin)
We ended with the bento dessert box which came with green tea ice cream, a chocolate type cake/souffle and a sesame truile.
Everything was FABULOUS! I don’t think I can go back to eating sushi from home. This just hit the spot. Each waiter we had was kind, our main waiter was just very busy at the bar so he was distracted helping. Over all it was an experience to remember and we are looking forward to coming again!

⭐ 2/5 – Overhyped, Not for Sushi Connoisseurs

Nobu is overhyped and doesn’t deliver on the quality of sushi you’d expect from its name. For anyone who’s a serious sushi connoisseur, this is a stay away—the sushi is not very good and definitely not worth the high prices.

    🍣 The Food: 2/5
The sushi was disappointing—it didn’t taste fresh or unique, and the flavors were bland compared to other places at a fraction of the price. For anyone who knows good sushi, this is definitely not worth the hype.

    🛎️ The Service: 4/5
Service was friendly, but the waitstaff didn’t go above and beyond. The experience felt more about the brand than actually delivering exceptional service.

    🏡 The Atmosphere: 3/5
The space is stylish and upscale, but it doesn’t have a cozy or inviting feel. It’s designed to impress, but not to make you feel comfortable for a long, relaxed meal.

💰 The Verdict: Overhyped and Overpriced
    ✅ Friendly service
    ✅ Stylish, upscale setting
❌ Sushi quality is not good, especially for the price
❌ Definitely not for true sushi connoisseurs

Would I come back? No, there are way better sushi spots that are much more authentic and worth your money.
