California Burrito Review (12): Mike’s Taco Club
Continuing my review of San Diego’s California burritos, I visited Mike’s Taco Club.
Product: The burrito was substantial and generously filled, but the ingredients had a tendency to settle at the bottom. The flavors were good, especially the sauces, but the meat had a distinctive taste that was not to my liking. The price point of over $15 is higher than the average in the area. I rated it a 8 out of 10.
Service: The service was polite enough, but there was an underlying sense of irritation in the staff’s demeanor. I rated it a 4 out of 10.
Atmosphere: The cafe benefits from a stunning ocean view, creating a relaxed ambiance. However, the high volume of customers can make it feel a bit hectic. I found it difficult to savor my burrito in such a bustling environment. I went to eat burritos by the ocean. 7 out of 10
This is a very small trendy taco joint at the south end of Newport Boulevard very near the ocean. It is often best to get it to go because it is so tiny. They have a wide variety of options including octopus. Their burritos are huge. It is a bit overpriced in my opinion but it is a bit touristy even though locals love it as well. If you can manage to squeeze in and get your order you can always take it Beachside or to the park just to the South and enjoy it with less crowding. Overall I would recommend Mike’s. There are so so many taco options in the area though maybe it is best to do a taco crawl and check them all out.
Came here for the first time and is didn’t disappoint! Tried the cali burrito, a protein asada bowl and the horchata with rum. Place was a little packed but the service was very good and cashier was super friendly and helpful. Salsas were spicy yet tasty. Would definitely come
Back again and try the surf and turf burrito and the fish tacos as that’s what I saw most people were getting.
The California Burrito was really good, sauces were solid, but felt like that could be an area of improvement. The seating is fun but there isn’t a ton of it. I came on a Wednesday and there was extra seats.
The lady at the register was very friendly!
this place is so good, that my bf & I take EVERYONE here: all of our friends, our picky mothers (got the seal of approval because my mom even checked in on facebook (iykyk), friends who live out of state, & more. this has been an absolute staple for years ever since our college days when we would drive down from UCSD just to get our mike’s taco club fix.
what we usually order aka our go to’s
tacos:
-trifecta taco | fish, shrimp, scallops, cheese, cabbage, onion, tomato, cilantro & avocado
-scallop taco | cheese, cabbage, onion, tomato, cilantro & avocado
-spicy shrimp | cheese, cabbage, onion, tomato, cilantro & avocado (pretty spicy but sooo good)
burrito:
-steak and shrimp cali burrito | steak & shrimp, french fries, cheese, onions, tomato, cilantro, guacamole & sour cream
-cali burrito | steak, french fries, cheese, onion, tomato, cilantro, guacamole, & sour cream
i still have yet to try everything else, but I bet they’re fire!
parking:
if you’ve been to ocean beach, you know parking can be an absolute nightmare. whether you get lucky to get a spot close by or have to walk a couple blocks, i promise it is worth it!
good food, AMAZING views since you’re just steps away from the beach, great customer service…honestly this place is top tier that i had to make a video about it on my food instagram.
