Love is an understatement for how I feel about the collard greens, my Georgia heart felt at home. We came last hour so they were out of a lot but what we got we devoured. Spicy link coulda been spicier but I still enjoyed it. The brisket was juicy and covered in their sauce which was spicy also. Highly recommend this over many of the trendy spots near north park or sports arena.
the best authentic, local neighborhood bbq I have had in san diego. wow! juiciest burnt tips, amazing baby back ribs and melt in your mouth brisket. the cornbread was good but the yams sent me over the top – they were so delicious. i am so glad i finally got here to taste a lot of what’s on offer here (and upset with myself i hadn’t tried them years ago). thank you for the extra napkins at the table, hand wipes and toothpicks. i took a few days to write this up and i am still shaking my head in disbelief about how good this place puts out some incredible bbq. the beef ribs weren’t available that day so I am looking forward to returning to try them along with the mac n cheese. keep up the phenomenal work you all are doing here. sorry I didn’t get to you years ago.
There’s a place tucked away in the heart of San Diego that feels less like a restaurant and more like a familial embrace. Bowlegged BBQ isn’t just serving food; it’s serving history, culture, and a sense of belonging that’s increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world.
As you step through the doors, the aroma of slow-smoked meats greets you like an old friend. But before the scent fully envelops you, it’s the walls that command your attention. Adorned with vibrant frames and portraits of prominent Black leaders, activists, and artists, the space pulses with stories and legacies. Each image isn’t just decoration; it’s a celebration of heritage that fills the room with life and a profound sense of culture.
The décor strikes a harmonious balance between reverence and homeliness. The worn wooden floors creak gently underfoot, reminiscent of a beloved relative’s living room where countless gatherings have taken place. Soft lighting casts a warm glow, inviting you to settle in and stay awhile.
Beyond the main dining area lies a hidden treasure: a cozy cigar lounge that feels like San Diego’s best-kept secret. Leather armchairs beckon you to sink in, cigar in hand, as the world outside fades away. The air is rich with the scent of fine tobacco, mingling subtly with the lingering notes of barbecue from the kitchen.
It’s here, in this intimate space, where conversations flow as smoothly as a well-aged bourbon. Locals and newcomers alike share stories, delving into the rich tapestry of San Diego’s history—from its early days to the vibrant, diverse city it is today. Time seems to slow down, each moment stretching into the next, as laughter and thoughtful discourse fill the room.
Bowlegged BBQ is more than a culinary destination; it’s a respite from the relentless pace of modern life. It’s a place where you can lose yourself and find yourself all at once—a low-key hideaway that feels like home, even if it’s your first visit.
The food, of course, is nothing short of exceptional. Tender ribs that yield to the slightest touch, smoky brisket that melts on the tongue, and sides that pay homage to traditional Southern fare while embracing local flavors. Each bite is a testament to the love and dedication poured into every dish.
In a city brimming with dining options, Bowlegged BBQ stands out not just for its mouthwatering cuisine but for the sanctuary it offers. It’s a reminder of the power of community, the importance of remembering where we’ve come from, and the simple joy of good food shared in good company.
If you find yourself yearning for a place to unwind, to step out of the hustle and into a space that feeds both body and soul, look no further. Bowlegged BBQ is waiting to welcome you home.
An amazing establishment. The food was delicious and the portions did not disappoint. It feels like being at granny’s house on a holiday. Everyone is enjoying food oldies are playing and the staff is very helpful.
Picked up a to-go order (no utensils were included, didn’t realize til I sat down to eat) on the way to a brewery consisting of a half rack of ribs, mac and cheese and collard greens. Staff at the register was super friendly and welcoming and I dig the low key vibes.
Ribs: After hearing so many good things about this place, I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the ribs. NOTHING about them was even close to fall off the bone. They were so tough… I tried to use a plastic fork and the fork nearly broke in half. Were they not cooked enough? I don’t know, but when I pay nearly $40 for a half rack + 2 sides, I expect quality meat. :/ The flavor was absolutely incredible, so I tried to force myself to eat them, but the way I had to fight to get the meat off the bone just ruined the entire experience. *I included pics that hopefully show what I am talking about*
Sides: The mac and cheese was good, not life-changing. Obviously not traditional southern baked mac with the crispy baked crust, but very moist and cheesy nonetheless. I’d get it again. I am a huge critic of collard greens, and tend not to like it at most places, but I enjoyed their’s. I’d get these again as well.
Overall, the flavors were good and portions were reasonable and that is the only reason they got a 2 instead of a 1. I love to support black-owned businesses so I will give this place another chance with the hopes of positively updating my review. I’d just dine-in in case I need to send the meat back….
